Our certified sports scientist, Jochen Huth, M.A., coordinates and supervises all of our scientific studies.

The Sportklinik Stuttgart is one of the few non-university hospitals in the Federal Republic of Germany that employs specialized personnel exclusively for research purposes.

In 4 operating rooms, over 5000 surgical interventions are carried out per year.

Among them are about 600 cruciate ligament replacement operations, 600 arthroscopic rotator cuff reconstructions at the shoulder, highly differentiated kneecap stabilizing interventions, as well as all endoprosthetic procedures at the knee & shoulder (s. table).

Many of these numbers are extraordinarily high. They reflect the great experience of our specialists, and are a sign of the patients’ trust, who put themselves in our care. The opinion of our team of physicians is often sought out in difficult cases with multiple previous operations or in complex and problematic cases.

However, numbers alone do not guarantee success.

It is important to place them in relation to the symptoms’ frequency of occurrence, to be able to evaluate the numbers at all. In addition, the number of surgeons who perform the interventions must also be evaluated. Similarly, the technology and know-how employed during surgery also plays an important role.

Control & Communication
Controlling and monitoring the medical devices, such as cameras, operating table and lights, as well as environmental lighting, is exercised via touch screens in the sterile and non-sterile areas. The intuitive user interface enables fast and central control of all functions. Thus time and personnel resources can be optimized. The medical appliances are mounted to pivotal arms attached to the ceiling, which fulfils the highest ergonomic requirements for the surgical team. Tripping hazards from cables lying on the floor are a thing of the past.

The modern, integrated audio and video technology for communication within and outside of the operating room ensure the high standards and requirements of the surgical team. Entirely new methods of communication are made possible by digitalizing the picture and video data and connecting the system to the hospital information system, making this data available within the entire Sportklinik.

Integration, Documentation, HDTV
The connection to the hospital’s hospital information system (for picture and video transmission) enable us to show diagnostic findings, e.g. radiological images accompanying surgery on the 40’’ wall monitor. The interdisciplinary and modular documentation system Endobase® has been optimally adapted to our requirements and enables efficient documentation before, during, and after an operation. The digital patient record gives us information on the complete patient history. Using HDTV camera systems (Endoalpha®) enables us to realize exceptionally detailed images, for example of cartilage surfaces.

Research & Education
The integrated audio and video technology supports us in the basic and advanced training of our personnel. In addition, live external transmissions, e.g. to national and international conferences and advanced training courses, are possible at any time.

In the field of orthopedics, sports medicine, and trauma surgery, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming more and more important.

Under the leadership of Head Physician Dr. med. Frieder Mauch, the Sportklinik Stuttgart has developed into a recognized MRI center. We are very active in daily clinical routine, as well as in the areas of research and education.

In this way, the “MRI Course for Physicians” organized by Dr. Mauch has established itself nationwide as a continuing education course for acquiring MRI knowledge about the musculoskeletal system.
